Koru Pillar Memorial
Celebrating life and it’s return, the Koru Pillar is the representation of a life returning to Papatuanuku, our mother earth.
The design forms two koru, the outer, Papatuanuku embraces the inner, the life. This design acknowledges New Zealander’s special relationship with our land inspired by Te Ao Maori burial tradition.
The inner koru is compacted with earth, tinted with red ochre and seeds, which over the course of the year will grow into native shrubbery into the koru form.
This celebrates the transformative nature of life and death and reinforces the memory of the loved one who lives on rejoined with mother earth.
